Volume 1   Number 2   August 2010

Talking design

Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre is a founding member of the Australian Craft and Design Centres (ACDC) network, a group of peak organisations from all states and territories that represent the professional craft and design sector across Australia. These organisations engage at a local, national and international level and offer individual services and programs that support professional craft and design practitioners, research, and sustainable practice.

As a network ACDC is represented on various national arts advocacy bodies and contributes to discussions around current issues and policy development. The application of craft and design, research and innovation and its role in resolving challenges we are now facing is one area currently undergoing vigorous discussion. The Queensland government is supporting a new international event, Unlimited: Designing for the Asia Pacific, to promote the value of design thinking in shaping a positive future for the Asia Pacific region. The ACDC network will facilitate a forum and a free public talk, Global Artisan, at the event to open discussions around craft and design micro enterprises, research, and sustainability. The ACDC program is supported as a strategic initiative of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council for the Arts.

The inaugural Unlimited event will run from the 4th to10th October and is well worth a visit to hear, see and explore the week long program.

It is timely that the Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre touring exhibition, F!nk: Fostering design, curated by Merryn Gates and showcasing eight entrepreneurial Australian designers, will be at dodeka in Seoul, Republic of Korea during this event.

Chris Hardy is a designer-maker and Lecturer in Industrial Design at the Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra. He has been working in the field of design for the past 15 years; has been involved with various committees and engaged in diverse design related projects in a consultative capacity; and designed and made household objects which have been recognised and shortlisted for various national and international competitions.

Chris' powder range of rings and bangles, pictured here in black, marries object design with advancements in technology, making use of the freedom of form that Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) offers. New stock has just arrived at the Centre and we are excited to announce that the powder range is now available in red and blue.
