Artist's statement

My work is informed by experiences and observations in different places in Australia and overseas. The techniques, which I employ are both: traditional and contemporary working methods reaching from shibori textiles to the design of glass panels in contemporary architecture.

My new works are inspired by the stay in Japan and were recently exhibited in Galerie Katelhon in Wamel, Germany (2009) and at Gallery East in North Fremantle, WA (2009). Before that the work was presented in two major solo exhibitions in Kyoto and Nara. Participation in group exhibitions include Australia Naturally at the Paris American Academy in France (2008), Echoes of Home: Memory and Mobility in Recent Austral-Asian Art at the Museum of Brisbane (touring show 2005-08), Transformations: The Language of Craft at the National Gallery of Australia (2005) and Textile Catalysts: SHIBORI Shaping the 21st Century at the Tama Art University Museum, Tokyo (2005). My solo exhibition With the Flow, Against the Grain which started at the Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre Gallery toured nationally, finishing at the Goulburn Regional Gallery in 2005.

Part of the new work is done in a smaller scale, which I found challenging since I have been mainly working on larger pieces until now. Current works are three dimensional wall pieces, which will be shown in a major exhibition in Germany planned for 2011.

Biography

From 2002-2008 I was overseas, accompanying my partner to Japan. My work in the field of design continued. However more in the way of collecting material, visiting places, studying history and contacting masters of the craft such as Asako Sakakibara (shibori) and Keizo Sato (traditional Japanese woodblock print). I experienced first hand age-old traditions, matagi hunting rituals in the north, kawabiki in Ise, one of the events held only once in twenty years. I looked at new art and architecture in rural villages like on the island Naoshima. It is a good example of east meeting west and the new confronting the old. A Sea of Light was the title of an installation in an old Japanese farmhouse where the visitor found water and lights in the place, which is traditionally used for the tatami floor mats. The city of Kyoto and my home in Nara have been a constant source of inspiration.

Practical work continued such as commission artworks for the Tokyo Technical Institute and exterior digital glass panels for the Kingston Foreshore Public Art Project in Canberra. Another major work was the commission of official gifts for the House of Representatives. To design and oversee the production of textiles gave me the opportunity to connect up with Japanese printing companies and related textile people.
