Phoebe Porter

Phoebe Porter
Artist's statement

Phoebe Porter is a Melbourne based contemporary jeweller whose work explores industrial processes and mechanical parts. Each of her designs is refined to its necessary elements, often using the fastening mechanism as a starting point which then becomes integral to the design.

Porter uses industrial materials and processes in combination with traditional gold and silversmithing techniques, combining machine and handmade elements. Movement and the tactile qualities of jewellery are continuing themes in her work, as is a tendency to work in multiples.

Biography

Porter graduated from the Gold and Silversmithing Workshop of the ANU School of Art in 2001 where she studied under Johannes Kuhnen and Ragnar Hansen. She undertook complimentary studies in Product Design with Gilbert Riedelbauch who encouraged her to pursue Computer Aided Design in combination with traditional techniques. Computers continue to play a strong role in her work both during the design process and to generate files for CNC processes.

A fascination with mechanical parts and working with multiples led Porter to approach Blanche Tilden to be a mentor and in 2005 she undertook a three-month mentorship with Tilden funded by the Australia Council. In 2008 the pair won a Victorian Premier's Design Mark for their ambitious collaborative jewellery project General Assembly.

Porter has received a number of grants and awards, most recently New Work grant from the Australia Council in 2010. She currently works from a studio in the extraordinary Mercator building at the Abbotsford Convent.
