Completing a third year, Designing a Capital: Crafting a City 09 saw Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre invite locals and visitors to our national capital to join in exhibitions and events exploring the innovation and imagination which shaped this city.

Focusing on the dynamic visual art scene, exposing new ideas and illuminating Canberra as a breeding ground for artistic practice, the two week program began with Epidemic - an exhibition in the Centre's Gallery showcasing the talents of graduates from the University of Canberra, Ben Hubbard and Renee Osterloh; Australian National University School of Art, Richard Blackwell and Dan Edwards; and Canberra Institute of Technology, Eden Waugh and Jacob Potter.

Artist Deborah Fiori presented LOST YOU – these words painted across local Canberra road Ginninderra Drive prompted Fiori to explore the multifaceted nature of loss from a personal place.

Audiences were invited to talk, chat and yack about what makes Canberra tick. Taking a leaf out of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's closing address of the 2020 conference in April 2008, local movers and shakers in the discourse on design, art and industry, Glen Martin and Obelia Tait, Pecha Kucha Canberra Co-ordinators; Robert Foster, F!NK and Co.; Dianne Firth, Environmental Design, University of Canberra; and Dr John Howard, University of Canberra, tackled the questions 'Does craft and design have a place in the innovation revolution?' and 'How can we drive this change in Canberra?'.

Recognising the nation's debt to early designers and craftspeople who played influential roles in establishing Canberra as a symbolically important built environment, the Centre presented Living with Ruth Lane-Poole: an Interior Legacy. This event highlighted the legacy of Ruth Lane-Poole and her crucial contribution to the establishment of two of Canberra's most iconic dwellings, the Prime Minister’s Lodge and the Governor General's residence. Experts Dr David Headon; Dr Susan Mary Withycombe; Charles Lane-Poole biographer John Dargavel; National Library of Australia's Eleanor Goodwin; Rowan Henderson, Curator, Social History, Canberra Museum and Gallery; Greg Peters, Director of Patinations Furniture Conservation Services; and Phyllis Hamilton, daughter of Ruth and Charles Lane-Poole, reflected upon the life and work of this significant designer.

On a lighter note, concluding the explorations of the Designing a Capital: Crafting a City program for 2009 was the Craft ACT Bingo Extravaganza. The night presented a new bingo lingo for the sell out crowd to grapple with while they vied for the prizes donated by members of Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre and local businesses.
