Reunite Reinvigorate - a birthday to be remembered

Over 100 friends, colleagues, members and supporters came together to celebrate the Centre's 40th birthday party on Saturday 10 September 2011. And what an evening it was. Ms Joy Burch MLA, Minister for the Arts, opened the festivities giving a warm and heartfelt welcome. Our Patrons Margaret Williams and Emeritus Professor David Williams AM along with Members of the Legislative Assembly and valued friends of the Centre Dr Chris Bourke MLA, Mrs Vicki Dunne MLA and Mr Brendan Smyth MLA joined us to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Guest speakers Jane Burns and Meredith Hinchliffe regaled guests with tales of the organisation's origins and the history of the craft and design movement in Canberra and Australia. One such story was the simplicity of the bureaucratic state 40 years ago with Jane recalling, "I got into my little blue car and tooled down the Hume Highway to see the then Minister for Customs, Don Chip."

Meredith recounted her first day on the job, also being the first day in our new premises in Watson. Meredith had already been warned that there was nothing to sit on. A large open space with a telephone on the fire hose (which she could barely reach) was the beginning of what we have today.

The hamper of local products and produce was won by Graham and Fay Skyring. They were overjoyed with their bounty of Lindsay and Edmunds chocolate, Di Bartolo wine, Homeleigh Grove olives, Crave Cookies biscuits, Jonathan Baskett handmade Bebol glasses, hand printed tea towels by Kate Ward and Amy Kerr, Deja Brew coffee vouchers, High Tea for two at Benedict House and were thrilled to have the opportunity to see the West Australian ballet's performance of Cinderella at the Canberra Theatre.

The fundraising auction, enlivened by auctioneer Deborah Clarke, was a highlight of the evening with much fun to be had. Bidding tussles ensued for the exquisite high quality craft and design works created by Gilbert Riedelbauch, Johannes Kuhnen, Ximena Briceno, Sharon Peoples, Tom Skeehan, Evan Dunstone, Bev Hogg, Brian Corr and wine from Di Bartolo Vineyard.

Thank you to all for making our 40th birthday party a wonderful success.
