In these two exhibitions the artists have presented us with their ideas, and constructed their work so that we the viewers are included as participants, not merely as observers. These works change and alter before our eyes, depending on where we stand, our distance from the work, our sightline and the power of the light that courses through them.

The exhibiting artists and I are all pleased that these small exhibits recognise the importance of leather in the celebration of Craft ACT: Craft and Design Centre's 40th anniversary.

Behind the scene was a professional development program presented in partnership with Canberra Contemporary Art Space (CCAS). The program was held over two days &endash; 29 September and 28 October &endash; and engaged with arts administrators, government, visual artists, craft practitioners, designer makers, students and stakeholder groups. Behind the scene keynote address on 29 September 2011 launched the two day program. The address was given by Dr Chris Bourke MLA who spoke about business and innovation in Canberra as a creative city.

Tonight I want to set the tone by concentrating on some key characteristics which I think have distinguished everything to do with the contemporary crafts of Australia. Big sounding ideals such as optimism, enthusiasm, generosity, clear purpose.

Sometimes it was difficult to find full time craftspeople who were able to give the necessary time to the President's role and members with other skills were drawn in. However, professional craftspeople have always given their time and knowledge to ensure that policies put in place by the organisation have a sound base.

Robert Baines: Metal was officially opened by Emeritus Professor David Williams AM on Thursday 18 August 2011. David was Director of the Craft Board of the Australia Council, former Director of the Australian National University School of Art, and currently Emeritus Professor with the ANU Research School of Humanities and is involved in various Boards and Committees.

In 2010 the Billabong Aboriginal Development Corporation sponsored Tracey Sarsfield to undertake a curatorial internship at the Centre. Tracey successfully completed her internship and curated the exhibition, EarthWeave.

Internationally renowned glass artist Klaus Moje is recognised as a founding father of the contemporary Australian glass movement. He is one of the most visible and recognisable artists in the world for glass, craft and education. He established the Australian National University (ANU) School of Art glass department in 1983 and was pivotal in the development of the Canberra Glassworks in recent years.
